Whiner Babies, Gen Y, Old People

Whiner Babies, Gen Y, Old People Ah, the whiner baby post.  The GenY/GenX/Boomer debate is old. I have blogged about it here: Gen Y Sounds Like A Bunch Of Entitled Whiners. I talk about the issue of stereotyping here. Here are two more posts that I found pretty interesting, both from Inc magazine. The first, 8 Old-School Rules for Gen Y, gives 8 pointers from more senior colleagues, like wake up earlier, experience trumps education, commitments mean more than just best effort (like, well, I tried my best), etc.  The real gems are in the comments of the article! The second article, 6 Gen Y Rules for Older Workers, is equally as whiny.  No comments yet, but both articles give insight into what each group is saying, which sounds a lot like: Stop judging me, Look at what Im doing right, Learn from me, I have good stuff to share with you, too.  Im not too old/young. The bottom line is, age discrimination isnt going anywhere.  We have to figure out how to deal with it, and work around it in our job search and networking. How do you deal with it? But, there’s no one who has your combination of personality, abilities, qualities and look: your personal brand. Even identical twins aren’t identical in every way. The fundamental qualities that form you, drive you, and make you attractive to us are extraordinary. In other words, there is no ordinary you. There is just you. You are an advertisement You are almost always advertising the assets that form your brand. Now, you might not think you are advertising â€" after all, you’re not buying ad-words or those mean little Facebook ads. But you ARE advertising, all the time. Just by showing up. The way you look â€" by photo, skype, and in-person   showcases your stuff. So visually speaking, are you telegraphing what you want us to take in and judge? Yes, we are judging you. It’s the first thing we do according to the new neuroscience literature, and exactly what your mother told you at least a decade ago. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. So, no flip-flops or tan lines if you want us to think you are hardworking (even though you can make deadline with a Corona balanced on your knee). No white shirt and Brooks Brothers tie if you want to be our creative director (even though they’re nearly vintage from the 80’s). No crazy do, cut and color wise, if you want to represent our line of industrial wind turbines (even if you just helped out a stylist friend at a hair show). HAHAHA!

HAHAHA! What kind of  WEIRDO would  title their post, HAHAHA!??? Ummmm that would be me!  I conducted an experiment last week and it resulted the COOLEST findings.   Monday morning I had an angry  customer on my hands.   I had a choice: I could respond back after his vent session trying my best to hold back my own frustration yet still handling his request OR I could let him know I understood his frustrations yet add a little humor.   IT WAS AMAZING!   He immediately  lightened up,  opened up, and we both got off the phone with smiles on our faces. Now, what would happen if I tried this the rest of the week with all of my clients and peers?   Here is what I found by adding HAHAHA to my conversations: 1.   Humor Helps Lighten Tough Situations.   No question- some critical situations do not call for humor and it could be interpreted as inappropriate.   HOWEVER, humor can be a tool to ease tension of a conversation and help build comfort levels.   I recommend using humor at the beginning and end of conversations/meetings. 2. HAHAHA Opens Doors.   A little laughter automatically brings guards down and opens people up to discuss topics like frustrations, family, hobbies and more!   It feels better doing business with those people you feel comfortable with. 3. Id Rather Talk to YOU!       I dont know about you but I would always rather talk to someone I could HAHAHA with  over someone who isnt down for a little chuckle.   Turns out, so do my clients!   As long as the expectation is set that we are here for business, why not laugh a little! 4.   We are Here to Have FUN, Right?     Who says you cant laugh on the job?   If you are spending 40 hours a week in the office, you better be having some fun!    Our clients feel the same way. 5.   HAHAHEALTHY!   Numerous doctors report that laughter reduces stress, boosts the immune system, improves lung capacity and oxygen levels in the blood, AND increases levels of endorphins, the bodys natural pain killers.   BONUS!! What do you have to lose except a few extra smile wrinkles? Give it a shot this week and get your HAHAHA on because Clients and company peers who HAHAHA together, Stay together!

11 Ways to Build Your Network After College Todays post is by, Angela Armstrong You’re fresh out of college and looking for a job.  You’ve tried the  job boards, your school career counselor, etc. but nothing has worked.  So what’s next?   Networking is the key to career success and a great way to lead to your next job.   But you are not interested in attending stuffy networking events.   You’re in luck; just about anyone associated with your college experience can form the foundation of a solid network. 11 Connections You Should Make to Build Your Post-College Network Your Classmates They may seem like competition, but no one knows  you better.    Since you will most likely be going through the job search at roughly the same time, they will know the openings out there.    This is also an excellent resource for information swapping. Alumni, especially recent graduates    Recent alumni who’ve paved the way for you are more acquainted with the kinds of job you hope to land.       More established alumni may be far  removed from the kind of entry-level job you’d like, but they also may have the hiring power.       To find out updates about what alumni are doing check your college’s publications.  Look for alumni in your field and geographic location. Parents /Parents of Classmates both can be a great resource for introducing you to new connections and getting tips on networking. Fraternity brothers, sorority sisters and Greek Organization Alumni Coaches Coaches can be an excellent network resource.  They care about their athletes and know lots of people. Guest Speakers The professionals who come to speak to your classes are a vast untapped market.    After their presentation, introduce yourself and ask the best way to keep in contact with them.      By building a rapport and keeping in touch with them, this could lead to something. Current and Former employers  Most student today can get through college without having a a job at some point.  Even if your job is not in your career field, your employer can still be a useful networking contact. Members of your religious community your campus ministry or congregation back home can provide a wealth of contacts. Members of professional organizations â€" most colleges sponsor student chapters of professional organizations, which are rich sources of networking contacts.    Your network efforts will benefit from a student membership in the nearest professional chapter. Peer Volunteers Volunteering can provide an abundant networking opportunities and college is a great time to get started.  You are only making a difference but also making some productive connections Informational Interviewees  this is an excellent way to learn about the realities of the work world and what to expect.    People generally are open to informational interviews as it gives them a chance to talk about their industry and give advice. You’ve heard it before that once a Greek always a Greek.  This network can begin to work for you almost immediately, not only with your current peers but with alumni, who may be able to assist you. Take a look around you; there are always great resources and contacts to begin building your network.    Put yourself out there and connect.  You are on your way to a fabulous career.
